The Bozeman Daily Chronicle published a nice story about the Turner Twelve’s visit to Yellowstone National Park.
Peering through a spotting scope at a gray wolf lying under a tree in the Lamar Valley, Kwanetta Davis smiled.
“Awesome,” the 17-year-old Dallas girl said.
Davis and nine other Dallas high school seniors went wolf watching Tuesday as part of a five-day trip here to learn about the wilderness – a rarity in their inner-city lives.

Morton sends his latest movie review:
I went to see 127 Hours after going back and forth for 2 days trying to determine if I could watch someone cut their arm off to survive. I am glad i did, as it is quite an amazing movie on several levels. The personal story told by the actor representing the man who had to do this in real life was revealing and very reflective. If you can stand the scenes where he breaks arm bone and cuts off his own arm with a dull knife go, rush to see it.

In Sunday’s Dallas Morning News, Tod Robberson wrote an opinion piece about Coach Carter, and his work with the Turner 12:
Carter founded the Turner 12 a decade ago with an eye toward guiding parents and their children to work as a team with a focus on excellent grades and college graduation. The program started with 12 middle school students from the 294-unit Turner Courts public housing project in South Dallas. It was an environment full of bad role models and precious few examples of success. Carter says he checked statistics and found that, in the entire decade before he began the program, only six kids from Turner Courts had attended college.
All of the original Turner 12 graduated from high school, and 11 went to college.

Morton saw the Argentine film, Anita, last night. He sends this review:
If you see this film playing near you RUSH to see it! It starts slowly and takes a shattering turn about a tenth of the way into the movie. The rest keeps you on the edge. This lost girl/woman with DS encounters a world she has never been in or understood. There is an aura of fear beneath the surface that keeps you alert to some tragedy that will befall her as she navigates Buenos Aires streets, lost with no money or people who know who she is. Yet her blind faith in people she meets brings out qualities you wouldn’t imagine so there is the yin/yang side of what you see, hear and feel as the story moves forward.
The acting, music and story is of the highest quality.

Morton sends his review of the independent film Get Low:
I was expecting a good to very good movie based on the reviews. I thought my parents would relate and like it. They did, but for me it was much better than I expected.
Each member of the ensemble was perfectly cast and the acting, story, filming, music was exceptional.
Do yourself a favor, go see it. If you are a curmudgeon or reclusive you will like it even better!

Dan Silverman was interviewed in the August 2010 issue of New Orleans Living Magazine about The New Orleans Women’s Shelter (NOWS). The interview focuses on his organization and the struggle of the poor to survive post Katrina.
We’ve been broken, and it’s going to take a long time to fix what was probably already broken before the storm.

StyleSubstanceSoul has posted an exclusive interview with Sue Cohn Rockefeller, the documentary filmmaker behind Making the Crooked Straight. In the interview she discusses her start as a filmmaker and how she became involved with Dr. Hodes.
I wanted people to see that one person can make a difference and that, in the overwhelmingness of the huge problems we hear about every day, we can take small steps that make all the difference, from helping an elderly neighbor with groceries, helping a person cross a busy city street, tutoring a student or sibling and just be reminded of gentle acts of kindness that we can do in our daily lives and be inspired to do them through the remarkable work of one man.
It is an interesting interview that focuses on how one person can make big changes in the world.

An article published in the journal Cell has brought a lot of attention to a compound known as P7C3. This compound encourages neurons to grow in the brain, leading researchers to speculate that this might lead to new directions for Alzheimer’s research.

Hocker Design Group. has received a 2010 ASLA Honor Award for the landscape design of Morton’s home, The PowerHouse.
The design jury at the American Society of Landscape Architects had this to say about the design:
This is art! Compelling and monumental. Its layers of industrial use that define the site are remnants the design pulls together. It celebrates its past use.
